Denis Istomin knocks out Novak Djokovic - Australian Open Post-Match Interview

Sorry for Novak, I played so well. Istomin shocked Djokovic

Blinkova is not yet ready for Plishkova

In Australia, sports are called a folk religion. Above all, Australian football, horse racing, rugby league, rugby union, regular football and cricket are popular on the Green Continent. It is cricket that is essentially a national sport. They also love tennis, but still less than the above types. This country hosted two Olympics - in 1956 and 2000. In 1956, tennis was not yet on the program, but in Sydney in 2000, tennis players competed for four sets of awards. That Olympics was great for the Russians. Evgeny Kafelnikov brought our country the first gold in tennis, and Elena Dementieva won a silver medal. In the final, she was beaten by Venus Williams.

Eugene and Elena have already completed their careers, and Venus continues to play. She has already reached the third round and is preparing for the match with Duan Yingying. Well, on Thursday, January 19, the matches of the second round ended in Melbourne. There are no Russian men left in the net, but there are quite a few girls. The first launch was held simultaneously by Anna Blinkova and Ekaterina Makarova. Both stayed on the court for about an hour. Anna, after a wonderful victory over Monica Niculescu, met with one of the main favorites - Karolina Pliskova. Anna was very nervous and in the first set brought the ball into play from the first serve only in two cases - this is 9%.

Plishkova was superior to her opponent in accuracy, activity and power of shots. Only in the second game was Blinkova able to cope with the excitement and won two games, but, of course, at the moment she is not able to fight Plishkova. In any case, we will thank Anna for a wonderful tournament, but with a score of 6: 0, 6: 2 Karolina went further.

Makarova and Vesnina go further

The match between Sara Errani and Ekaterina Makarova, and it ended quite unexpectedly. Sarah never took her serve in the first game and acted as number two, but she made a lot of mistakes. Makarova quite convincingly took the set - 6: 2. In the second game, as in the debut, the first break was made by the Italian, but Ekaterina immediately returned the serve, and then won five points in a row with a score of 0:40.

And after a couple of minutes Sarah grabbed her knee, called the doctor and was forced to refuse to continue the meeting with the score 2: 6, 2: 3. We wish the Italian health, and congratulations to Makarov on reaching the third round. It will probably be much more difficult for her there, since Dominika Tsibulkova is a rival of a different level. She defeated Shuwei Se not without difficulty - 6: 4, 7: 6 (10: 8). The Slovak played only the fifth matchball, and even played a setball between them.

Elena Vesnina is playing quite calmly. She convincingly defeated Mandy Minella - 6: 3, 6: 3. The Russian woman allowed quite a lot of marriage, but Mandy did not show her best tennis either. Jennifer Brady is waiting for Vesnina in the third round. Qualified American wins hardest win over Heather Watson - 2-6, 7: 6 (7: 3), 10: 8. Watson did not apply for a match in the second set, and in the third she did not use five match points! Thus, Vesnina will play a tennis player from outside the top 100 in the third meeting in a row. Naturally, she has a great chance to go further.

Confident play of Raonic and Gasquet

Expected with great interest match between Elena Ostapenko and Yulia Putintseva. Both tennis players are known for their violent temper and argue skills. Moreover, at the very beginning of the meeting it became known that the Hawk-Eye was not working on this court. However, the match itself turned out to be quite easy for Elena - she won with a score of 6: 3, 6: 1 and will now face Plishkova. Johanna Konta and Caroline Wozniacki made another pair. Both confidently beat Naomi Osaka and Donna Vekich, respectively. Note that Vekich came to support Stan Wawrinka.

There were not many interesting matches in the men's half. Milos Raonic, David Goffin, Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet won confidently. Note that Gasquet defeated Carlos Berloc 6: 1, 6: 1, 6: 1 and won his easiest victory in his career at the Grand Slam tournaments. David Ferrer and Grigor Dimitrov also went further, but in four sets after losing the first. But the real performance was staged by Novak Djokovic and Denis Istomin. The tennis players played five times, in all cases (including twice at the Australian Open) Novak won and gave only one set. This time the match turned out to be completely different. In the very first game, Istomin had six break points, but Novak won them back and kept the serve in 15 minutes. This set the tone for the whole party. Almost every second game ended with more or less. Istomin managed to make a break, but he immediately gave up the serve.

Istomin shocked the world

The tie-break went like a swing. The favorite started confidently and took the lead 4: 1, but Denis won four goals in a row. On the opponent's set point, Novak served well, and then the Serb himself had two set points, but he missed both, including on his serve. Denis used his second chance and won the 85-minute marathon game. One might think that after playing at the highest level and at the limit of concentration, Istomin would slow down a little, and Novak would take advantage of this, but this did not happen. The representative of Uzbekistan served well and only in one game allowed the Serb to catch on. Moreover, Djokovic got a little nervous at 4: 5, 15:30 and made a double. But he immediately pulled himself together and played two set points due to the serve, and then added and wonl two more games - 7: 5.

The match was not only tense, but also spectacular. Istomin tried to maintain high speeds and regularly delighted the audience with masterful strikes. However, in the third game, the level of play dropped. Denis did not hit as deeply and sharply as in the first two sets, and Novak, quite quickly taking the third segment 6: 2, took the lead in games. At that moment, it again seemed that Istomin no longer had enough strength for a real fight, but Denis again surprised. He took advantage of the minimal relaxedness of the Serb, who served on three mistakes. Novak soon returned it, but at 4: 5 he had to play the set point, which he successfully coped with. As a result, the tennis players reached a tie-break, and there Istomin shone again and began to punch right through. He took the lead 5: 1, Novak gradually began to approach, played two set points out of three, but on the third Denis took an ace right into the corner - 7: 6 (7: 5)!

One of the main sensations of the century

Maybe now Istomin will finally get tired? No! The match had lasted more than four hours, but physically and psychologically Denis looked, if not 100, then at least no worse than Novak. He continued to serve powerfully and had an excellent shot through the left lane. At the beginning of the set, he managed to make a break, and then in the next three games gave only three points on his serves! The Serb had practically no chance of being accepted. After an inaccurate trick, Istomin, who lost 23 matches in a row to the top 10 tennis players, took over the second racket of the world! Denis achieved the main victory in his career in 4 hours 48 minutes with a score of 7: 6 (10: 8), 5: 7, 2: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 4. I feel sorry for Novak, because I played so well today, I surprised myself. Thanks to my team, my mom, you are doing a great job. From the third set I had seizures, so I don't know how I managed to win this meeting, - Istomin said. Novak immediately went to the press conference and was surprisingly calm and even smiling. It is worth paying tribute to Denis. He played amazingly and deserved to win. No doubt he was better at key points. I'm not happy with my game. What will I learn from this match? I will extract that I have to pack my things and leave (laughs) . In fact, I take some lessons every day. It doesn't have to happen after a defeat, ”Novak said.

One can argue for a long time about what kind ofIt will take this match in the list of the main sensations of the century, but, of course, it will definitely be in the top five. Andy Murray is now becoming the main favorite of the tournament, and will also remain the first racket of the world for at least several months. There is a great opportunity for all other players at the bottom of the bracket to reach the decisive stages. And literally an hour later, another sensation took place, but already in the women's category. While everyone was in shock from Novak's defeat, the third seeded in the women's category, Agnieszka Radwanska, lost. It is curious that she lost to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who, like Istomin, plays with glasses. Croatian won very confidently - 6: 3, 6: 2.

On Friday, January 20, the third round matches will begin. First of all, we note the matches Elina Svitolina - Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elena Yankovich - Svetlana Kuznetsova.
